STEAM Person of the Month

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.
A. My name is Chinatu Ego-Osuala and I am the third of seven children to my parents. I am a Dentist and the owner of Paramount Dental Care, located in Takoma Park, Maryland. We are privileged to have been in operation since July of 2016, providing service and care to the Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and D.C area.
Q. What was your formal introduction to science and what about it did you find alluring?
A. I have not been able to peg down what I would describe as a formal introduction to science, but my brothers and I were raised by a father who is a physician and a mother who studied education and public health. In a sense, you could say that science is what I have been surrounded by since I was born. Through growth and maturity, I found myself fascinated by science because it envelopes and is woven into the fabric of life and living, and a cycle that is ongoing and ever evolving through the passage of time.
Q. In your youth, did you foresee a future where you could incorporate science into your everyday life?
A. Due to lack of understanding in my earlier years, I made good effort to avoid science, opting instead to focus on becoming an engineer or an architect like my uncles because I loved to draw and wanted to design my own car. It was discovered through my education and personal development that everyday that we have in this world is an art and experience in the science of living. So, a future in science was inevitable for me. I just had to find the discipline of science best suited to my developing abilities and desires in life.
Q. How are you using this aspect of STEAM to make your mark in our world?
A. Understanding that science surrounds us all, my development was grounded in faith that governed by principles which guided my willingness to become the best person that I can be, to make the right mark on my environment or the world. Dentistry was a field that was suggested that I explore by my older brother, who is a practicing endodontic specialist in dentistry as well. According to him "you're pretty meticulous with things that don't even matter, and trying to make them look good... you would do well in dentistry.'. And just like that, dentistry became my chosen feild of study.
Q. Which science trailblazer of the past do you wish that the upcoming generation had more access to their work and findings? Why?
A. Thankfully access to information and material is a lot easier today but I think and believe that personal development grounded in faith and discipline creates an environment or community conducive for upcoming generations that's willing to make better of themselves. As well as better use of the material, information, work, findings that they may have or find. But to answer the question, Napoleon Hill, Norman Vincent Peale, Earl Nightingale, Dale Carnegie, Joseph Murphy, Dennis Waitely, James Allen, Jim Rohn... and I'm Christian, so my parents provided guidance by way of the principles in the Bible. These are just some of the trailblazers in my list, chosen because their studies calls for individual accountability, to look inward, and if you are willing, build the characteristics necessary to do well in ANY concentration of science; both work and play.
